What Does a Ruby Symbolise?

Rubies are known as the “gem of kings” and for centuries have been thought to represent protection, wealth, and nobility. However, in modern times rubies symbolise passion, love, and devotion. At Charles Rose, we use rubies that are vivid and striking in colour to create bespoke rings to encapsulate your everlasting love.

What Colour Are Rubies?

Rubies are red, but their exact shade can vary. Hues can range from a vivid red to a brownish or even pinkish red. The most valuable rubies are typically pure red which is neither too light nor too dark. We only use the finest rubies when handcrafting our jewellery therefore our rubies are pure in colour with the perfect saturation.

Where Do Rubies Come From?

Rubies are mined in a variety of locations around the world, including India, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Sri Lanka, Australia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Madagascar, and Mozambique.

Is a Ruby More Or Less Expensive Than a Diamond?

Rubies are generally less expensive than diamonds. This is because diamonds are much rarer than rubies, and they are also more durable. However, it is possible for some rubies to be as expensive, or more expensive than diamonds. These rubies usually have an exceptional natural colour which makes them rare and therefore more valuable.

What Shape Cuts Are Best For Rubies?

The most popular shapes for rubies are oval, round, and cushion. However, any shape that highlights the ruby’s rich colour will be beautiful. One of our signature ruby rings is the Arum Ruby which contains an emerald-cut ruby surrounded by baguette-cut diamonds.

Is Ruby as Durable as Diamond?

Rubies are the second hardest gemstones in the world, with a score of nine on the Moh’s scale. However, diamonds are still the hardest gemstone with a Moh’s score of 10. Therefore, rubies aren’t as durable as diamonds, but they are still extremely hard and durable making them a splendid choice for engagement rings.

How Do I Care For My Ruby Ring?

To keep your ruby ring looking its best, it’s important to clean it regularly with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. You should also avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures. As with our diamond engagement ring, we offer a lifetime complimentary cleaning and a variety of complimentary machine polishing services.
